A challenging academic programme is combined with a broad range of extra
curricular, cultural, recreational and physical pursuits to encourage
each pupil to develop his or her potential both as an individual and as
a member of society.
Throughout their Grosvenor career, children are encouraged to develop
confidence in the core skills of numeracy, reading and writing with clarity
and expression. Considerable emphasis is given to grammar, punctuation
and spelling in English and reasoning processes in Mathematics.
The requirements of the National Curriculum are fully addressed.
Other subjects taught are Religious Studies, History, Geography, Science,
Design and Technology and Information Technology. Each Junior School class
has its own computer and full access to the Information Technology room.
French is introduced in Year 3 and taught formally from Year 4. At this
stage, Science is separated into Physics, Chemistry and Biology. All classes
have two periods each of music and art or pottery each week.
Children who show outstanding ability in artistic and sporting activities
will be encouraged and supported in every possible way.
The youngest pupils develop co-ordination and basic physical skills through
the music and movement aspects of their curriculum.
From Year 2 upwards, between three and seven periods a week are devoted
to games and physical education.
In the Summer, the main activities are cricket, athletics and rounders,
whilst soccer, hockey, and netball are played in the Winter Terms. There
is a full fixture list each term. We also participate in cross-country
running and swimming.
Art, design and technology and craft work are part of the curriculum throughout
school. Older pupils are encouraged to take an interest in a range of
hobbies and activities that run in the school lunch or after school.
Pupils may take tennis lessons in the summer. As with carpentry, piano
and violin lessons, this activity is an optional extra.
Each term a number of outings and expeditions are organised. These may
take the form of field trips in connection with history, geography and
science, or visits to local factories and places of interest.
Visits to France are arranged every year. Outward-bound weeks and weekends
are organised, together with occasional Sunday walks. A school ski trip
takes place each winter.
