Grosvenor School Bulletin

Week Commencing 6th February: 316

WELCOME

Welcome to our new pupil in Year 5, Marcus Antippa, who joined us this week from Australia and will be with us until the summer term.

YEAR 1 TRIP TO NOTTINGHAM CASTLE

On Friday 27th January, Year 1 visited Nottingham Castle to learn about toys and how they have changed over the years. Helen Crowfoot led the session and we had a lovely time looking at some Victorian toys and playing with such things as hoops, whips and tops, bagatelle and marbles. Thank you very much to Mrs Butcher and Mrs Whalley who came with us.

MUSIC NOTES

We were all delighted to welcome the singing group "Candy" (aged 11 - 15) from Tbilisi in Georgia on Tuesday morning. Having won the Eurovision Junior Song Contest in December 2011, the 5 girls - Mariam, Gvanisa, Irina, Ana and Ira - are currently in England for 3 weeks as part of their prize, and this week have been based at New College where Mrs Monk's husband, Guy, is a teacher of English as a Second Language.

Everyone gathered in the school hall to hear them belt out the winning song, Candymusic, as well as another song, You and I, by Lady Gaga. The girls sang a cappella, that is to say without the aid of a backing track, and performed in up to 5 part harmony with amazing confidence and style. Afterwards, they joined in the Year 5 & 6 rehearsal for Oink, then toured the school with girls from Year 7.

A video of their winning performance is available on Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElE9KQAOMSM - and more information is available on http://esckaz.com/jesc/2011/geo.htm (scroll down for some in English!).

A huge thank-you to Mr & Mrs Monk for organizing such a treat for us all!

More international music events!

John Keys flies off to Milan in Italy on Thursday to give an organ recital in Vergiate at the weekend.

Sarah Watts, our woodwind teacher, is organising an international Bass Clarinet day at Keele University on Friday 10th February, with players from Switzerland, Belgium, Italy and the USA.

1st XI - U13 COUNTY CUP

We were due to play Ranby house at 11-a-side, but since Ranby, The Samworth Academy and Grosvenor were the only Notts competitors for the County Cup this year, there was a late re-arrangement of fixtures. Instead of a slog over to Worksop College one evening to play under flood lights, since Ranby were here and Samworth Academy are quite close we played a two-part match – the first as part of the 7-a-side competition, the second as a friendly 8-a-side.

Grosvenor played Samworth Academy first and dominated the game. Unfortunately, only 3 of the 9 attempts at goal were on target and the keeper saved twice with 2 of the 6 misses hitting the post. Oliver Pavis did squeeze one through to record a frustrating 1-0 victory.

Ranby then played Samworth Academy. Despite Samworth’s playing well and having a much better game, Ranby scored on every shot to win 3-0. Grosvenor and Ranby came together to play the last game. Ranby made a very good start and quickly scored. However, Grosvenor levelled the score a minute later with another good goal from Oliver Pavis. After that it was end to end with some great defending and attacking from both sides. Ranby had some chances but were blocked. Then Grosvenor had some and with a minute to go, missed by a whisker. The game ended as a draw and thus Ranby were crowned County Champions on goal difference. They, and Grosvenor, go through to represent the County in the Midlands finals at Cannock in March.

Our compliments to The Samworth Academy, who have made huge strides in a year. They lost by 15+ goals last year and this year, things were very even at times.

After a short break, when we fed Samworth Academy and said our ‘Goodbyes’, Ranby and Grosvenor took to the field again. This time, Ranby dominated for large spells and won 5-0. Grosvenor had chances and played some good hockey but generally were too tentative, defensively minded and, as a result, defended too deeply giving Ranby the chance for shots on goal. There were however, good performances and Quan had the chance to show what an excellent keeper he is. Two saves stay in the mind – in one he came out to quickly intercept a forward who was about to shoot, taking the ball – and then the player! The other was a one-on-one, which Quan closed down to narrow the angle and then saved with some style.

The Men of the Match were therefore Quan, Jacob Latham, - for tackle after tackle – and Oliver Pavis for his hard work and two good goals.

COLTS HOCKEY vs FAIRFIELD

On Monday 30th January, the Colts played their first official match of the season.

Five of our current hockey players have already played for the First XI this year, to good effect.
A squad of ten players had been selected to play mini hockey against Fairfield at Loughborough but due to the cancellation of the U13 match we had 3 more players available.
This fortunate situation allowed us to play 2 separate teams against our opponents.
The mixed teams were as follows:-

R.Stoker, W.Stephens, W.Cajdler, O.Latham, J.Cartwright, T.Ghadiali, M.Egglenton,

R.Stoker, J.Egglenton, A Willis, T.McCann, T.Wilkins, W.Snapper, O.Brewill.

Each team played a 20 minute match against Fairfield, with Rory playing his usual confident and accomplished game in goal for both teams. In the first contest the home team looked strong and punished any mistakes with 2 well-taken goals. The Grosvenor team battled hard but could not manage to score as the play was directly through the centre of the pitch. The second half was more in our usual style, exploiting pace and passing down the flanks. The addition of Oliver Brewill in attack provided the outlet to hold the ball and link up with the two ‘Toms’ to apply pressure. Goals were scored in open play by Thomas Wilkins, Oliver Brewill and an excellent half volley from a lifted cross by Tom McCann. You could call it one match all, 2:0 and 4:1, but we prefer to call it a victory by 4 goals to 3. All players acquitted themselves well with defensive pairings, Will and Wojciech and then Jamie and Alfie doing stirling work.

The Man of the Match was Tom Wilkins for his overall influence on the game. This augurs well for the rest of the season. Chris Adcock

HIGH FIVE

Grosvenor A and B teams played home fixtures against Ratcliffe College this week. Our A team played against a strong and experienced Ratcliffe A team. In the circumstances they played exceptionally well. They marked tightly and made lots of interceptions to keep the ball away from the Ratcliffe shooters. As a result, Ratcliffe had few shooting opportunities and after the first quarter only managed to score one goal in each subsequent quarter. The final score was a win for Ratcliffe by 5 goals to 1. Esme and Molly were made joint Players of the Match. Esme, for her one goal and Molly for her commitment in defence despite having a foot injury.

Our B team has predominantly Year 4 players and they were up against a Year 5 Radcliffe team. At half time the two teams were drawing 1-1 after a goal scored by Meghna Nandha. The winning goal of the match was scored by Helena Domansky-Sais, who was made Player of the Match. Our B team has already made a lot of progress in their passing skills. We now need to remember the positional tactics ewe have practised in training.
