YEAR 4 BOYS WIN AGAIN!

DAGFA SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
This was a very successful event for Grosvenor. Ella Grant-Clapham got us off to a flying start with 3rd place in the Year 4 girls race. She was closely followed by the Year 4 boys, fresh from their NHS triumph. Once again they achieved 1st place. Unfortunately their team mate Joe Cartwright was absent through illness. Highest individual finisher was Tom McCann in 5th, supported by Oliver Brewill, Oliver Latham, Joshua Gardiner and Thomas Wilkins.

The Year 5 & 6 girls put in a sterling effort, with best finishers Savanna Edsall in 8th and Esme Hamilton in 9th. Emily Major and Anita Paliah both finished strongly.

The best Year 5/6 boy was Barnaby Frost in 5th but the team work of Josh Pavis, Jacob Latham, Benji Hopkin, Stephen Monckton and Louis May gave the boys an excellent 2nd place overall.

The Year 7 & 8 boys had to run 2 laps of the course, so Marcus Barnes’ 3rd place was even more commendable. The team, with Edward Sidebottom, Jack McCann and James Robinson missed out on 3rd place by 1 point!

A big thank you to all our helpers and supporters.

YEAR 3 TRIP TO BEAUMANOR PARK

Year 3 enjoyed a challenging two days at Beaumanor Park Outdoor Education Centre last week.

The first morning was spent on a group-based orienteering activity. This proved to be quite difficult but was a good introduction to working as a team and helping each other to achieve success.

In the afternoon we learnt how to lash logs together. The challenge was to make a bridge across a stream which would have to be tested by everybody. Two teams made two very different kinds of bridges and most managed to get across the stream without getting wet!

A delicious evening meal was followed by games in the gym before retiring to bed in our cabin in the grounds of the park. Waking up the next morning to yet another glorious day of sunshine and frost was a definite bonus. After breakfast in the cabin, we made our way to the ‘classroom’. Learning the importance of how to keep warm outdoors was followed by a session in the woods building shelters. These were made from large branches and brushwood found in the woods. A second shelter had to be made using an additional sheet of plastic. Again the children worked in teams.

The centre proved to be a very pleasant place to stay and the food provided was outstanding. The children certainly learnt some new skills over the two days and probably surprised themselves as to how much they could achieve by working together. Our thanks to Mrs Monk for accompanying us.

INTERHOUSE CROSS COUNTRY

This annual event will take place on Thursday 18th March, starting at around 9.45 am. Pupils will need to come to school in the correct kit – group T-shirt, shorts track suit, fleece, blue socks and trainers. They should also remember to bring their School Uniform with them and a named towel.

In the past, parents have kindly helped in transporting pupils back to school. If you would be willing to do so this year, please make sure that you have completed an up to date “Transporting pupils during the school day” form, available from the School Office. Thank you.

HIGH 5 YEARS 4 & 5

Years 4 and 5 played fixtures against Fairfield Prep on Monday 8th March.

Year 4 Captain, Ella Grant-Clapham, led her team tirelessly and was made Player of the Match for her efforts in both attack and defence. We dominated play and had far more attempts at goal than Fairfield. The long-awaited goal, the only one of the match, came in the last few minutes of the game. Ellie Wakefield was the scorer and was made joint Player of the Match.

The Year 5 match, captained by Katie Woodhouse, was a repeat of the Year 4 match. The only, and winning goal, was scored by Amy Needham in the final minutes of the game for which she was awarded Player of the Match. Katie was very supportive of her team, positioned herself well and was made joint Player of the Match.

Both teams played exceptionally well and made the choice of Player of the Match a difficult one.

HIGH 5 U11 & U13

The U13 and U11 squads each played a High 5 fixture away at Greythorne Primary School on Wednesday 10th March.

The U13 squad found it very difficult to adjust to the much lower goal posts at Greythorne. They overshot and missed a tremendous number of shots. When Emily Major finally succeeded in getting the ball to drop through the net in the third quarter, our supporters spontaneously cheered!

We lost the match by 4 goals to 1 which reflected poor shooting and not lack of other skills. This was a match we should have at least drawn and probably won. Emily Major was awarded Player of the Match for her solitary goal.

The U11 squad gave the U13 squad a lesson in how to shoot goals. They scored in each quarter. Isha Paliah and Josephine Stanton scored a goal each in the first quarter. Esme Hamilton scored 2 in the second quarter, Anita Paliah scored 2 in the third quarter and Emma Corden scored 1 in the final quarter. We won the match by 7 goals to 0.

Josephine Stanton and Esme Hamilton were each awarded Player of the Match for their commitment and excellent play. as well as their shooting skills.

A HALF TERM OF HOCKEY ENDS ON A HIGH

Grosvenors’ pleasing Hockey season continued up to half term with a good game against an older Nottingham High School side. It was a 0-0 draw but the score did not reflect on a good game with some lovely skills and determination on show.

The next day, in miserable weather, the team played the other, older, U14 side. This time it was Fernwood School. The first half was dominated by Grosvenor with 2 goals from Jack McCann and 1 from Edward Sidebottom. To ensure that the game was not too one-sided, and others had a chance to play, Captain Edward rested for most of the second half. Fernwood scored 2 goals but the Grosvenor dominance was restored towards the end which was underlined by a good George Major goal leaving the final score 4-2.

A week later, our final game of the term was against St Hugh’s – a new opposition who are a similar sized Prep School, from Woodhall Spa. A friendly game was a little one-sided with Grosvenor dominating. Edward Sidebottom opened the scoring. He then set up George Major and finished the half with another goal after a goal against the run of play from St Hugh’s. During the second half, Edward again set a good example and rested to allow others a game and ensure a not too uneven score. However while he was on, he completed his hat-trick and George Major scored 2 more to complete his hat-trick also and settle the score at a 6-1 victory.

GROSVENOR U13 VII vs DENSTONE COLLEGE – MONDAY 8th MARCH

The First Eleven’s annual meal was preceded by two very entertaining 7-a-side games which had been postponed from earlier in the season and re-started the Hockey fixtures after half term.

The B team played with great enthusiasm and increasing skill. Despite dominating large portions of the play, unfortunately they could not take all their opportunities to score. They conceded goals and came back from behind, twice, to draw the match 2-2. The teams’ well taken goals were from Joshua Pavis and James Robinson. The Denstone coach and the game’s umpire complimented the team on their hard work, skill level, enthusiasm and sportsmanship. He commented positively on both the defense and the attack.

The A team dominated most of the game but lost a little shape at the end as they became tired after a high energy competition. This allowed the opposition to score both a late goal and a very late goal to pull back from 2-3 to win 4-3. However all enjoyed an excellent game of good skills. Edward Sidebottom dominated the game and the only out-fielder to come close was his determined namesake on the other side. The other two players who shone particularly were the two goalkeepers. In only his 8th game in goal, James Leu Soi produced some outstanding saves.

Unfortunately for the Grosvenor team, they met an outstanding keeper at the other end who had to make many saves, keeping his side in the game until they managed to pull things together in the last minute.

Players of the Matches: Dylan Jeans, Joshua Pavis and James Leu Soi

1st XI vs St ANSELMS'

This enjoyable game was illuminated by 5 excellent goals from Grosvenor in the 5-2 victory.

Both teams took a while to get used to the bouncy water-based astro. St Anselms’, who mostly play on grass, used their size to hit the ball hard and run fast. Tackling with increasing confidence and tenacity, Grosvenor managed to control the threat but not without the occasional scare and good last minute tackles and saves from James Leu Soi, Hussein Alibhai, Edward Church, Awais Ahkter and the dynamic Dylan Jeans supported by Edward Sidebottom.

At the other end, the forwards and halves showed some lovely touches with George Major, Thomas Stephens and James Robinson in particular making some super moves. However it was Jack McCann’s tenacity and Edward Sidebottom’s skill which shone. Edward scored 3 excellent goals from set plays or the resulting action, Jack volleyed a cross past the keeper at close range and later bravely took on the charging keeper and “nutmegged” him as they collided. The Man of the Match was Edward Sidebottom.
